Brand new Hamlet in Glyndebourne line up at MK Theatre

Date Posted:17/11/2017

Glyndebourne HamletA brand new opera based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet is one of three productions coming to Milton Keynes Theatre, Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 November, for Glyndebourne Tour 2017.

Hamlet was created by Australian composer Brett Dean and Canadian librettist Matthew Jocelyn and gives new life to Shakespeare’s epic tragedy. The new work had its world premiere to rave reviews at Glyndebourne Festival this summer.

Brett Dean’s richly atmospheric and deeply dramatic music captures the essence and timelessness of Shakespeare’s story, supported by Matthew Jocelyn’s libretto, which consists only of words and phrases written by or attributed to Shakespeare.

Taking the title role is rising British tenor David Butt Philip, performing opposite the International Opera Award-nominated British soprano Jennifer France as Ophelia.

The Tour line-up is completed by two revivals - Nicholas Hytner’s popular 2006 production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Annabel Arden’s vibrant staging of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, first seen at Glyndebourne Festival 2016.

Now in its 49th year, Glyndebourne Tour was founded in 1968 to act as a showcase for emerging artists and to enable Glyndebourne to share its work with bigger audiences.
