Date Posted:27/10/2014

Cyclo Cross World Cup Milton KeynesThe third stage of the UCI World Cup is being held in the UK for the first time and they’ve chosen Milton Keynes’ Campbell Park as the ideal place to hold it.

Elite cyclists from around the world will take part in this stage on a course designed to test and challenge their abilities over a course combining different terrains, steep hills and lots of mud!

Thousands of spectators are expected at Campbell Park on Saturday 29 November to watch the races, ring their cowbells, visit the beer and food tents or watch one of the giant screens around the course.

Cyclo-Cross is a discipline ridden over a 3km circuit and includes clearings, roads, wooded paths and fields. The races generally last between 30 minutes to an hour. The riders cycle several laps of the circuit. To clear some of the toughest difficulties such as steep paths, muddy tracks and artificial obstacles, riders have to carry and run with their bikes. This discipline is a remarkable school of cycling which requires great riding technique, determination skill and great stamina.

Milton Keynes has a track record of being able to host and deliver major events. Milton Keynes is easily accessible from all areas in the UK as it is located on the main North –South trunk roads. Milton Keynes is only 3 hours from the major sea ports connecting with mainland Europe , especially Belgium and Holland. Luton Airport also has links with major cities in Europe allowing easy flight transfers and is only 40 minutes away.

The perfect location for the event is Campbell Park in Central Milton Keynes. This offers the perfect venue for design and course layout, but also has huge advantages of being in the centre of Milton Keynes which enables visitors to utilise the Centre MK shopping and other facilities.

Cyclo-Cross is a growing sport within the general Cycling umbrella and is ridden by Mountain Bikers , Road cyclists and increasingly, by junior cyclists. It is the main Cycling sport in Winter. Throughout Europe Cyclo-cross is the most popular cycling sport throughout the winter months with almost fanatical support at all the main races. Recent events in Belgium have seen crowds in excess of 45,000.

In the UK, there are local events held and national events held throughout the winter months, but until recently there has not been the opportunity to showcase the best riders in the sport to the British competitors or spectators. This event gives us that opportunity.

In 1992 Britain hosted the World Cyclo-Cross Championships in Leeds and over 40,000 attended the event. Since that day no major World class Cyclo Cross event has been held in the UK.

Milton Keynes will now host a World Cup round and the main event will consist of 120 of the World’s leading riders

Tickets cost just £10 per adult and children under 12 go free! On the day tickets will be £15 per adult with free entry for children under 12.
