Love Me Tender Did William Shakespeare write Shakespeare? Even after 400 years the jury’s still out on that one.

Did William Shakespeare write Love Me Tender? No, of course not. But the new musical, by Tony Award Winner Joe DiPietro, that’s about to roar into Milton Keynes Theatre (27 Jul to 1 Aug), has all the elements of a Shakespearean classic: cross dressing, mistaken identities, lovers’ chasing each other around the place and a string of amazing Elvis Presley hits. Elvis numbers? OK, not too many of the Bard’s plays feature a score that sizzles with hot songs made famous by ‘The King of Rock ‘n Roll’ but apart from that…

It is the mid-1950s. Somewhere, in small-town America, the locals are about to be All Shook Up, their fun-free, repressed lives turned upside down. A guitar-playing, hip-swivelling stranger rides into town on his motorbike. Is he The Devil In Disguise in his Blue Suede Shoes? For Natalie, the love-struck, tomboy mechanic, it’s time to find out. It really is Now or Never.

Love Me Tender is funny and moving, it’s a tale of hope, second chances and the healing qualities of Rock ‘n’ Roll. In its opening few weeks, it has clocked up rave reviews both for the production and the amazing performances from a starry cast that includes award-winning singer and platinum selling artist Mica Paris as local bar owner, Sylvia.

Sian Reeves (Cutting It, Emmerdale) plays misery-in-chief, Mayor Matilda Hyde, Shaun Williamson (Eastenders) is Natalie’s widowed dad, Jim, and Ben Lewis is that cool Hound Dog, the macho, heart-melting, pelvis-swivelling stranger whose mission it is to wake up and shake up the town.

From the producers of Hairspray, Jersey Boys and West Side Story, Love Me Tender, inspired by and featuring the music of Elvis Presley, is feel-good, summer entertainment that you just Can’t Help Falling In Love with.
