MK Gallery branches out 'intu' local shopping mall

Date Posted:27/01/2016

MK GalleryThere’s a chance for parents and children to get a taster of the regular fun, creative learning activities offered by MK Gallery on Saturday 30 January in the unusual setting of the busy shopping mall at intu Milton Keynes. Between 12 noon and 4pm accompanied children aged 5+ are welcome to drop in to a free, “Art Nest Boxes” workshop taking place near the popular Frog Clock and the Information Desk at intu.

Artist Aaron Head has been commissioned by MK Gallery to devise and host the session, where children will be able to make their own paper nesting box sculpture to take away with them. Materials will be provided to inspire children to customise a paper nest box, working to an urban theme, which might result, for example, in a modified skyscraper or row of terraces. No special skills are needed by children, just plenty of imagination!

Speaking of the event, Katharine Sorensen, MK Gallery’s Communications Director said: “When intu invited us to propose a bird-themed activity to complement the RSPB’s The Big Birdhouse Tour, we were delighted to accept. Our “pop-up” workshop will be seen by thousands of people, helping us raise awareness of the fantastic family learning activities we regularly provide at MK Gallery, and which will continue uninterrupted during our major renovation and expansion between now and 2017.”

The RSPB’s national Big Birdhouse Tour, currently hosted by intu Milton Keynes until the end of January, helps focus attention on their Big Birdhouse Project about bird habitat loss and ways that the public can help. The intu mall contains a trail of 15 larger than life birdhouses, each artfully designed by British personalities such as radio DJ Jo Whiley, the One Show presenter Alex Jones and former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq.

Kirsty McGiff, Marketing Manager at intu Milton Keynes commented: “MK Gallery’s art nest box themed children’s workshop is a great way to draw attention to the RSPB’s Big Birdhouse Tour on its final weekend with us, and an equally great way to shine a spotlight on MK Gallery and the great education work that it does in and around our community.”

Spaces in the Art Nest Boxes children’s workshop are limited and subject to availability on the day, but anyone unable to fit in or without time to stop will be able to pick up a bird colouring-in sheet to complete at home, along with details of the gallery’s Tuesday and Wednesday morning Start the Art sessions for under 5s and Saturday Studio sessions for over 5s.
