Schools invited to link up with Lightning

Date Posted:02/07/2018

MK Lightning schoolsWhen the 2018-19 Elite Ice Hockey League season starts this September, it will also mark the start of another season of the Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning’s Schools’ Enterprise Scheme.

A visit from MK Lightning mascot Pucky, accompanied by an MK Lightning player to explain all about the sport and the physical benefits of playing, starts the process. Discounted tickets are made available to the school for their chosen home fixture, with students learning how to promote them to their family and fellow students. For every adult ticket the students sell, they receive £3 cashback for school funds for educational or recreational supplies.

Last season no fewer than 23 schools took part in the scheme, sharing in £3,400 raised over the season and more than 2,000 people buying match tickets through the scheme. And participation isn’t restricted to schools in Milton Keynes - last season, schools from as far afield as Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire as well as Buckinghamshire.

MK Lightning Commercial Manager Sarah Jane Smyth said the club is looking forward to helping more schools raise funds and introducing them to the excitement of ice hockey. “We love meeting new young supporters and introducing them to the excitement of ice hockey. Our players have always enjoyed going out to schools to meet students and give them an insight into the sport, and telling them how they can get involved if they want to start playing.

“Community involvement is a huge part of the club’s ethos, so it’s great to be able to give schools additional funding and see the students and their families at home match nights. There’s already been some interest in next season’s scheme so we’d love to hear from schools who want to get involved!”
