The Little Mermaid makes a splash at MK Theatre

Date Posted:10/04/2018

The Little MermaidNorthern Ballet is bringing Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale to Milton Keynes on the final leg of its World Première tour of The Little Mermaid. Telling the story of a young mermaid who is willing to give up everything she knows in the search for love, the Leeds-based company returns to Milton Keynes Theatre with performances of this new ballet from Tue 17 – Sat 21 April.

The Little Mermaid is choreographed and directed by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE whose most recent creations for the Company include hits Cinderella, The Great Gatsby and Beauty & the Beast.

This new production will immerse audiences in the mystical underwater world of Andersen’s famous fable with designs by Kimie Nakano (sets), Tim Mitchell (lighting) and David Nixon OBE (costumes). The production also features an original score by Sally Beamish.

David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director at Northern Ballet, said: ‘The Little Mermaid is an enchanting story and the fantastical underwater world of the mermaids evokes such beautiful imagery. So many people have grown up with this classic tale and so I am looking forward to bringing this new production to Milton Keynes for the first time and reintroducing our audience to the world beyond the waves.’

Northern Ballet is holding additional events at the theatre including a pre-show talk offering an intriguing insight into Northern Ballet and the production; a youth ballet workshop; as well as an audio-described performance and touch tour for visually-impaired patrons.
