Brasserie Blanc

Before we start on the review I have a confession to make. When we arrived at Brasserie Blanc, we went through the wonderful huge revolving door to see Raymond Blanc standing in front of us. Now, I’m reliably informed that this isn’t normal (even when you’re doing a review). Apparently the top man was there to take a look at the recent restaurant refurbishment after Brasserie Blanc has been located in The Hub for five years. He seemed very pleased and even stayed on to sign some books for some very happy diners who were just as shocked as we were to find him there.

The restaurant looks and feels very relaxed. Wooden floors and gentle lighting means it does have a look of France about it, can’t really put my finger on why, it just does. It was a very busy night, all but one of the tables were full with more people coming in all the time.

Once we had the new Winter Menu in our hands it was a difficult choice plus our waitress had also gone through the special board. Over 10 different starters had us stumped for a while but I finally settled on Chicken liver parfait served with red onion marmalade. My dinner guest ordered the hot smoked salmon served with cucumber salad and horseradish cream. Both were really good, I think there was definitely a chef in the kitchen who must have passed the parfait through a sieve several hundred times as it was that smooth.

The mains were another difficult choice; steak, free range pork, slow cooked beef, pan-fried fish and even mussels. I went for a classic rump steak served with French fries (of course) and a pepper sauce. My guest went for the roast Lincolnshire free range pork belly and crackling, roast apple, green apple sauce with a side order of carrot and swede mash. Now, I’m going to put this down in black and white right here; the steak was simply the best I have ever had. Cooked to absolute perfection (medium-well, in case you want to know) and very, very tasty. I think getting a steak right shows that the chefs know their basics and that has to bode well. The pork was also very good but a little on the pricey side at just under £19.00 for one of the cheapest cuts of meat.

After a much needed break, we summoned up the courage to tackle the dessert menu. One stood out for me, I can’t say no to a Bread & Butter pudding served with crème anglaise, and as this was their Winter Menu, my guest went with the winter pavlova served with cinnamon apple, cranberries, toasted almonds and caramel syrup. Mine was suitable rich and filling, and didn’t last long...the pavlova looked and tasted delicious, a perfect end to the meal.

Overall Brasserie Blanc celebrates all things French but it also makes a big deal about supporting and using local producers with meat sourced from nearby estates and snails that come from just down the road in Aylesbury, this all means that the food miles are kept down; good to know. But even with this the tone of menu is distinctively French and that it should be. We loved the atmosphere and the food and will definitely be back for more; when does the Spring Menu start?

Daytime parking can be difficult and costly (pay and display). Evenings, after 6.00pm, there is plenty of parking available and it is free. You can also park in the Sainsbury's car park for free which is a short walk away,
