Clary's at The Casino MK

Having never been to a casino restaurant before I really didn’t know what to expect. Was it just going to be quick cheap food, to get you back out and playing the tables or would it be more high class food put on for the high rollers...we were about to find out!

The first thing that strikes you when you enter The Casino MK through the revolving door is the sheer scale of the place, it’s huge. The main gaming floor stretches out in front of you almost as far as the eye can see. The expanse of the place does amaze you and you can’t help but be a bit impressed. Slots to the right of you, tables in the middle and the restaurant to the left and that’s where we were heading.

The first impression of Clary’s Bar & Grill is that it’s pretty small, we were expecting something much louder and ostentatious but it seats about 40 people in total and has an intimate feel about it. But you can see out on to the main gaming floor through slightly distorted glass and open partitions, just so you can keep an eye on all the gaming action. The staff were very attentive, offering us drinks and our menus to browse. The menu is not huge but it does give a very varied choice.

For starters we went for a distinctly seafood flavour with traditional old smoked salmon served with fresh lemon and capers, and shell-on King prawns cooked in chilli and garlic oil. Both were very tasty but the cost of the prawns was quite steep for just four prawns who looked more like Queen rather than King. The dish really needed to be served with some sort of toast or bread to help soak up the delicious oil.

On to the main courses and we’d heard good things about the steaks so we went for the 10oz sirloin and the beer-battered fish and chips. As we discovered from the menu all the steaks are hung for 28 days and are locally sourced from Zig Zag farm on the outskirts of Oxford and supplied to the restaurant by Lloyds Butchers in Milton Keynes; it certainly lived up to the expectations, very good.

The beer-battered fish was just delicious – the batter was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Chips were also good but the best of all was the homemade tartare sauce. If I could have bought some to take home I would have! The portion sizes were also very good, so much so we had to wait before ordering our desserts.

But what a choice to select from...after much deliberating we chose the lemon and blackcurrant posset and the chocolate brownie (but could have easily gone for the majority of the desserts on offer particularly the banoffee cheesecake). The posset was light and refreshing and came served with a homemade shortbread. But it was the brownie that surpassed itself...warm, rich and served with a white chocolate ice cream. It simply left me wanting to go back again for more and more.

The restaurant did surprise us ... smaller than we expected but it really kind of works in a building (Xscape) that does house a multitude of other restaurants to choose from should you wish. The food was of an excellent standard and left us wanting to go back for more which can only be a good sign. And for those wondering, we did have a little flutter on the tables after dinner, but it is also a fantastic place to people watch, definitely a favourite pastime of ours.
