Festive Afternoon Tea at Whittlebury Hall

Arriving at Whittlebury Hall we checked in for our Festive Afternoon Tea and were shown through to the lounge which is a vast, ornate room with a roaring log fire and believe or not, Santa sat next to it (not a real one).

We were given the option of Mulled Wine, tea, coffee or hot chocolate and the latter seemed appropriate given the cold day and the time of year. When the food arrived it was served on a lovely three tier cake stand and looked amazing. The savoury options were on the bottom and offered triple layer turkey and cranberry sandwich (crusts removed, of course), little smoked salmon blinis and a goats cheese crostini. All were exquisitely presented but it would have been nice to actually have been told what everything was on an accompanying menu (we had to guess).

We then tucked into the two scones each (yes, each) and the little pots of homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream...the scones were actually still warm from the oven and were probably the best scones we’d ever tasted.

The final top layer was a patisserie dream. Four brilliantly presented little desserts for us to try. A Christmas spiced chocolate ganache topped with a gingerbread star, a mini brandy Christmas cake with buttercream, a deep purple cranberry macaroon with a fruit centre and a mulled wine mini trifle. Our favourite was the trifle, loved the flavours and the gorgeous homemade custard.

Overall we really enjoyed this festive treat – it would be perfect to treat a loved one or a friend either before Christmas or just after as it’s available until 31st December.
