Robin Hood Review

Robin Hood Milton KeynesIt’s that time of the year when we throw ourselves into panto season again and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a rip-roaring pantomime show during the festive season? It’s weirdly, madly, uniquely British and it doesn’t matter that no other country understands why we do it and why we Brits find it all so damn funny!

This year’s offering at Milton Keynes Theatre is the legendary tale of Robin Hood, so we expected lots of green tights, bow and arrows, the big bad Sheriff of Nottingham and a whole lot of fun and farce, and that’s exactly what we got.

Eastenders’ very own legend Shane Richie plays the man himself and as the only ‘star’ of the show – he does a brilliant job of carrying the whole production with great comic timing, singing, dancing and generally keeping the whole two and half hours pushing along nicely.

We were very impressed by ‘The Acromaniacs’ a group of international gymnasts and tumblers who play The Merry Men and use a small trampoline to incredible effect. The other usual suspects are there; Maid Marion, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett and Little John, and of course The Sheriff of Nottingham – who was roundly booed in all the right places.

We’re not going to spoil any of the surprises that come thick and fast throughout the show, but we did struggle with the relevance of one scene involving the ‘secret weapon’…let’s just say it didn’t really fit with the story or the time period.

The show does feature a 3D screen section, so we donned our fancy glasses that we were given on the way in and enjoyed an adventure through the deep dark forest…we loved it, but I would say some smaller children might find it a little bit scary, I think there could have been a few lighter moments during that section.

The children we took loved The Greatest Showman songs and we found them happily singing along and the many jokes definitely hit the right balance between the kids and the adults in the audience.

Overall, it’s panto…you kind of know what you’re going to get before you even turn up, but we all absolutely loved it and we’ll keep coming back year after year, OH. YES. WE. WILL!
