Cycling for fitness

Did you know that regular cycling adds an average of 2.5 years to your life expectancy and that cycling is one of the most effective forms of aerobic exercise? Cycling can improve your mood and help reduce stress and depression – and best of all it’s free – so why not get on your bike! 

With cycling getting more popular all the time as a good way to get fit and enjoy the great outdoors more and more people are looking for cycle rides with a bit of a difference. In Milton Keynes, we have a good mix of cycle routes and activities perfect to get those muscles burning.

  • Two National Cycle Network routes pass through Milton Keynes. Route 6 (Derby - Luton) takes a route northwards through Great Linford, Castlethorpe and onto Northampton. Route 51 takes a westerly route from Central Milton Keynes past the Teardrop lakes, through Furzton, and then on a mainly offroad surfaced track into Winslow. Both of these routes are well signed and easy to follow. The two routes also make up part of the "Millennium Circular Ride" which loops around the city for approx 12 miles.
  • The Heritage Cycle Trails let you take in a different view of the city. The Trails all start from Willen Lake but can be joined at any point on the route. They explore some of the interesting outdoor areas that Milton Keynes has to offer including pretty villages, sculptures, historic buildings and loads more.
  • For road cycling enthusiasts many of the roads throughout Milton Keynes are dual carriageways making them easier and safer to ride.  The A5D road has a specific cycle lane and stretches from Fenny Stratford in the South of the city to Stony Stratford at the northern edge.
  • For off-road cyclists the woods at Bow Brickhill, Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands offering some challenging mountain bike trails including a 300 metre hill with a 12% gradient. For more information on the mountain bike trails click here.
  • The BMX track at Pineham offers something a bit dfferent – try your hand at some exciting jumps or challenge your friends to a race. The track is open everyday and is free to use.
